Gran Vía and the Royal Palace · Madrid
Irina and Nikita did not need a venue for this one. They had the whole of central Madrid, a tulle dress, a white shirt and time to walk.
We started on Gran Vía while the street was still quiet. The low sun came in sideways between the buildings, so we kept it behind them and let their outlines glow. Nikita tied his striped scarf around Irina's neck, and they crossed the avenue hand in hand.
From there we walked to Plaza de Oriente. The Royal Palace fills the whole background, and the fir trees frame it on both sides. A wide shot with the two of them tiny in front of it is still one of our favourites from the day.
The palace gardens gave us the quieter photos. A long pond with the hedges reflected in it, tall clipped cypresses that hide you completely, and beams of light falling through the trees. Their rings ended up on the bark of a tree for a detail shot.
Later on, Irina put on a brown leather jacket over her dress. Nikita carried her across the square in front of the palace, laughing the whole way.
We finished in the old centre. The arcades of Plaza Mayor, narrow streets with shop windows and a square packed with people, where the two of them carried on as if nobody else was there.
