Nerja is on the eastern side of Málaga province, where the Sierra de Almijara comes down to the sea. The old town ends at the Balcón de Europa, a promenade on a headland, with coves and beaches on either side.

East of town, past Maro, the coast turns into cliffs: the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a protected natural area with small coves at the bottom. Inland, the white village of Frigiliana is about 5 km uphill.

It is a place for small days: a proposal at sunset, an elopement for two, or a wedding for family and close friends. The scale of the coves suits that better than a big crowd.

We know Nerja from Elena & Vulpe’s surprise proposal. They came from Bucharest, and Vulpe planned every detail with us beforehand; we stayed out of sight until the moment, then used the last light for a session on the beach.

For a wedding here, Diego photographs and Tamara usually films, so the photographs and the film come from the same eyes and tell the same story.

When to plan it

Proposals and elopements work all year. Winter afternoons are mild, with highs of around 13–15 °C in January, and in August the highs reach about 30 °C, with the sea at its warmest, around 23 °C.

The sun sets at about 9:35 pm in mid-June, 8:25 pm in mid-September, 7:40 pm in mid-October and 6 pm in December. In summer we meet in the last two hours of light; in winter the light is soft all afternoon.

July and August are the busiest months on the beaches. For a quiet cove, choose May, June, September or October, or start early in the morning.

Dates to check: the Feria de Nerja in the second week of October (8 to 13 October in 2026), the Noche de San Juan on 23 June, when the beaches fill up at night, and Holy Week (21–28 March 2027). In summer, the Cueva de Nerja festival brings concerts from mid-July to early August.

Getting to Nerja

Málaga Airport is about 70 km away, around 50 minutes to an hour by car on the A-7. Granada Airport is about 1 h 10. There is also an ALSA bus from Málaga bus station, about 1 h 15.

The streets around the Balcón de Europa are pedestrian, so plan where cars and taxis drop guests off. Nerja is on the other side of Málaga from our studio in Estepona, but it is in the province of Málaga, so there is no travel charge.

For a proposal we choose the spot together: a cove, the Balcón at quiet hours or a lane in Frigiliana. We go and look at the light beforehand and agree a signal with you, so nothing is left to chance.

Cobbles and the steps down to the coves are hard on heels. Flat sandals for the walk, and the good shoes in a bag.

Questions couples ask

How do you plan a surprise proposal?

We agree on the spot, the time and a signal with you beforehand, and stay out of sight until the moment. Then we continue with a short couple session.

Have you photographed weddings in Nerja?

In Nerja we photographed Elena & Vulpe’s surprise proposal, which you can see on this page. We cover weddings and elopements here too, as one team for photo and film.

Can we have a ceremony on the beach?

A symbolic ceremony on a public beach usually needs permission from the town hall and Spain’s coastal authority, and it is hard to get in high summer. A hotel with its own garden over the sea is the simpler option.

Can you film with a drone over the Maro cliffs?

The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo are a protected natural area, so flights need checking with the regional authorities, and we always look at the official ENAIRE map first. We tell you honestly what is possible before you plan around it.

Can we elope in Nerja?

Yes. For weddings with fewer than 50 guests, one photographer and/or one videographer cover 9 hours, from €1,280 for photography and €1,580 for film, plus VAT.
