Hacienda San José · Mijas
Gemma's morning started in white satin, surrounded by bridesmaids in pink striped pyjamas. Ella Megan did her make-up, there was a cork to pop, and the whole group squeezed onto a carved wooden bed for a photo.
Damien got ready in the library of the house, among old bookshelves. Someone knotted his tie on the porch and pinned a white rose to his lapel. Two page boys in grey waistcoats and sunglasses kept an eye on the rings, with signs to prove it.
Then the men walked down the stone drive together, and Gemma put on her off-the-shoulder corset gown and a veil that trailed far behind her.
The ceremony was on the lawn, with white chairs and the sun high over the garden. They were both laughing before the vows had even started. After the rings, they walked back up the aisle through a cloud of petals, and every guest squeezed in for one big photo under the palms.
We took them up to the white tower for a few portraits in the arched windows, then back down among the palms and agaves. The speeches were at the top table, beside the pool.
Later in the evening we went out with the two of them. A short walk took us into the long grass, with the Sierra de Mijas going gold behind them. Damien lifted Gemma off her feet, and that is the photo on this page.
At night they cut the cake in front of a curtain of fairy lights, and Totally Folked turned the courtyard into a dance floor. A neon sign with their new name glowed in the garden, glow sticks came out, and nobody sat down again.
Pink pyjamas, a library and two page boys on ring duty.
Golden grass at sunset, then a live band in the courtyard.
