The church on the castle

High up in the white village of Mijas Pueblo, the Inmaculada Concepción is the parish church most couples mean when they talk about a church wedding in Mijas. It was built between 1540 and 1565 over the ruins of a mosque and a castle, and consecrated in 1631.

The castle left its tower behind: a sturdy square Mudéjar tower in brick that now holds the bells. The entrance itself is simple, a brick arch set in a whitewashed wall.

Inside there are three naves, divided by round arches on marble columns, with a Mudéjar timber ceiling over the central one and a gilded altarpiece at the end. When the church was restored in 1992, eight forgotten frescoes of the apostles came to light.

Getting married here from abroad

It is a Catholic parish in the diocese of Málaga, so the ceremony is a Catholic wedding. At least one of you must be Catholic; a mixed marriage needs a dispensation from the bishop.

For couples living abroad, the paperwork starts with your own parish priest. He prepares the pre-nuptial file and contacts the parish in Mijas. Expect baptism and confirmation certificates dated within six months of the wedding, permission to marry outside your parish and proof that you are free to marry.

Documents usually need a sworn Spanish translation and an apostille. Allow six months or more and ask the parish for its own list.

Mijas Pueblo is a busy tourist village: when Olivia arrived, visitors were watching from the square. Plan your guests’ arrival and the cars with that in mind.

Olivia & Elliott’s wedding

Olivia & Elliott married here on 27 June 2026. Olivia arrived in a classic convertible and gathered her bridesmaids in pale blue and the flower girls in the shade of the pines.

She walked in on her father’s arm, they laughed through the ceremony and kissed in front of the gilded altarpiece. Outside, guests threw petals, and we made a portrait with the pageboys under the brick arch.

Then we stopped at a viewpoint over the coast for portraits, and the party went on at Hacienda San José. Tamara filmed the day: the film is on their page.

Light and space

The photos show a bright white church. Light comes in through the two oval windows of the choir above the door, and the gilded altarpiece warms the altar. The dark marble floor sets off the dresses.

The columns divide the naves, so the full entrance can be seen from the central aisle while we work from the sides without getting in the way. In summer there are fans on the walls.

Outside, the pines shade the square at midday, which you will appreciate at a June wedding.

Questions couples ask

Is this the same as the San Sebastián church?

No. The Inmaculada Concepción is the parish church, the one with the brick tower. San Sebastián is a smaller church on the street of the same name.

Can we marry here if we don’t live in Spain?

Yes, with the parish’s agreement. Your home parish prepares the file and sends it to Mijas. Book the date first.

Do we need a civil ceremony as well?

Not in Spain. A Catholic wedding has civil effects here. Check how your own country registers a marriage celebrated abroad.

Where can we celebrate afterwards?

Olivia & Elliott celebrated at Hacienda San José, also in Mijas. Our Mijas page has more weddings at that venue and others nearby.
